MTG Collector Guides · CARDHAVEN TCG
A practical guide to Magic: The Gathering sealed displays, shipping cases and master cases—with a focus on accurate quantities and traceable labels.
Who this guide is for: MTG buyers learning generic shipping-carton and master-case terminology.
Three names that must not be treated as synonyms
A Magic: The Gathering booster display groups retail booster packs inside one box. A display case is an outer grouping of multiple display boxes. A master case may represent a further logistical grouping, but the term's exact meaning and quantity vary by product line and distribution channel. The seller must state exactly which level of packaging is being sold.
Use a packaging-level worksheet
| Field | Single display | Display case / master case |
|---|---|---|
| Contents | One named retail booster display | Multiple displays or cases; exact count must be declared |
| Identifier | Retail item code | Case-specific or logistical identifier |
| Seal evidence | Original display wrapping | Outer carton tape and label |
| Buyer verification | Set name, type, pack count | All unit quantities and carton labeling |
| Storage | Retail-box protector | Larger carton shelf support |
Collector Booster cases differ from Play Booster cases
Do not infer quantity using the wrong booster format. The publisher's Star Trek information, for example, describes a Play Booster box with thirty packs and a Collector Booster box with twelve packs. Those numbers describe one display. How many displays are inside a factory shipping case is a separate question requiring the exact case documentation.
Build a reliable case record
- Exact product title and expansion, including language and release edition.
- Booster type: Play, Collector or another explicitly named category.
- Number of packs per display and displays per carton, each from a cited source.
- Photographs of manufacturer tape and case labels when accessible.
- Case GTIN or part number only if directly verified—not generated from a display UPC.
- Receipt or distributor packing-list reference and stated sealed condition.
An important marketplace distinction
A multi-display lot that a retailer assembled may be perfectly legitimate merchandise, but it should not be described as an untouched manufacturer master case without evidence. For collectors who value original cartons, that distinction materially changes the product being purchased.
FAQ
If I know the display UPC, do I know the case GTIN?
No. Related packaging may have distinct trade-item identifiers. Independent case evidence is needed.
Is every large carton a 'master case'?
No. The term is not a universal quantity standard. Demand a verified breakdown of contents.
Publisher-verified example: Star Trek displays
Wizards of the Coast's Collecting Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek guide confirms that a retail Play Booster display contains 30 Play Boosters while a retail Collector Booster display contains 12 Collector Boosters. Each Play Booster has fourteen Magic cards; each Collector Booster contains fifteen Magic cards with a different set-specific composition. The two retail displays therefore have very different pack counts before anyone discusses higher-level cases.
The same official guide lists November 13, 2026 as the global tabletop launch. An MTG product title mentioning “case” or “master case” does not change that published per-display pack breakdown, but it introduces another quantity that the seller must document: the number of displays in the outer carton.
| Trade item | What is verifiable from Wizards' guide? | What still requires a case-level source? |
|---|---|---|
| Star Trek Play Booster Display | 30 Play Boosters per display | How many displays belong to a shipping case |
| Star Trek Collector Booster Display | 12 Collector Boosters per display | How many displays belong to a case or master case |
| Distributor case / master case | Set and underlying retail formats | Outer carton quantity, barcode and specific part number |
Case vs. master case: don't use an assumed multiplier
“Master case” is a trade or distribution term rather than a universal mathematical rule. It may describe a larger aggregation of previously packed products, and its meaning depends on the manufacturer's case configuration. A buyer should ask for an exact written breakdown such as number of retail displays in one case and, where appropriate, number of cases within one master carton. Never fill missing quantities with a generic industry average.
GS1 US defines packaging levels such as Each, Inner Pack, Case and Mixed Case. These levels help identify how products are grouped for ordering and shipping; they do not certify a particular seller's use of “master case.” For case-level GTIN identity, see GS1 US packaging-level guidance. A retail display's identifier cannot safely be substituted as the barcode of an undocumented factory case.
Sealed-condition expectations
One lot containing six individually packaged displays is not necessarily a factory-sealed case. If the original outer manufacturer's carton is important to the buyer, the listing should state that explicitly. Real photographs of the case label, manufacturer tape and full carton can help; stock images of a single Collector Booster box cannot prove an untouched case will be shipped.
A useful question to send a seller
“Could you confirm whether this is one original factory-sealed case or a seller-assembled group of displays, the exact number of sealed displays included, and whether there is a readable case-level label or distributor description for this item?”
That question separates product identity from assumption and avoids confusion about a case's content or GTIN. It is especially important for high-value MTG Collector Booster cartons, where a format error can change what the buyer expects to receive.
